Description
AH-1W Cobra Mahogany Model
The AH-1 Cobra is a two-bladed, single engine attack helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter. The AH-1 was the backbone of the United States Army’s attack helicopter fleet, but has been replaced by the AH-64 Apache in Army service. Upgraded versions continue to fly with the militaries of several other nations. The AH-1 twin engine versions remain in service with the United States Marine Corps as the service’s primary attack helicopter.
This specific AH-1 Cobra model is the AH-1W Cobra, a member of the Twin Cobra family, which also includes AH-1J SeaCobra and the AH-1T Improved SeaCobra. The W version is a day/night version with more powerful engines and advanced weapons capability. Although earlier variants have been phased out, the Super Cobra still remains the backbone of the USMC attack helicopter fleet. During the Gulf War, 78 Marine SuperCobras deployed, and flew a total of 1,273 sorties in Iraq with no combat losses. The AH-1W units were credited with destroying 97 tanks, 104 armored personal carriers and vehicles, and two anti-aircraft artillery sites during the 100-hour ground campaign.
