Description
C-123J Provider Mahogany Model
The C-123 Provider is an American military transport aircraft designed by Chase Aircraft and built by Fairchild Aircraft. The C-123 was originally designed for the United States AIr Force but was also in service with the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, United States Coast Guard and various air forces in South East Asia. The C-123 had many roles, including VIP transport, spraying Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, and search and rescue missions. The final examples of the C-123 in active US military service were retired from the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard in the early 1980s.
The C-123 began its operations in Vietnam at the end of 1961. These aircraft were part of the USAF’s Special Aerial Spray Flight, as part of Operation Ranch Hand, tasked with defoliating the jungle in order to deny rebels their traditional hiding places. After the end of the Vietnam War, remaining C-123 were transferred to Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard.
