The squadron didn’t last long, forming in March 1943 and disbanding in 1944. It was a training group and it prepared men to fly the B-24 Liberator, raining hell from above on Axis powers. Despite the 399th’s short tenure, it produced one of the most memorable emblems – a tophat-wearing skeleton clutching a bomb in each hand.
