Description
508th Fighter Squadron Aeroplane Apparel Company Ball Cap
If you are looking for a historical connection to one of the units that played a part in D-Day, this ball cap bearing the insignia of the 508th Fighter Squadron is the one for you. Initially deployed to England in 1943 with the P-39 Airacobras they had trained in, the 508th was quickly re-outfitted with the more capable P-47 Thunderbolt. The pilots of the 508th were in action over the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and were instrumental in enabling Omar Bradley’s First Army to break out into the French countryside at Saint-Lo. The 508th when on to support Allied forces in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge and paved the way for the Allied invasion of Germany.
The emblem of the 508th Fighter Squadron depicted on this ball cap reflects the devil may care? attitude of those brave young airmen. On a sky blue disk, a bright orange bomb falls through the atmosphere on its way to the enemy target. Atop the weapon, a skeleton reclines in a relaxed fashion, reflecting the quiet but deadly serious professionalism of the 508th’s pilots and ground crews. It was that dauntless professionalism that earned this squadron accolades from not only their government but from appreciative French and Belgian officials as well.
The Aeroplane Apparel Company Monogram is prominently displayed on the back of this hat.
