Description
B-307 Pan Am Mahogany Model
The Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner was a four-engined airliner based on its B-17 heavy bomber. The 307 used the same design as the B-17 for the wings, tail, rudder, landing gear, and engines with a new, circular cross-section fuselage, designed to allow pressurization. The 307 was the first commercial transport aircraft with a pressurized cabin. This feature allowed the aircraft to cruise at an altitude of 20,000 ft, well above many weather disturbances. The first order, for two 307s, was placed in 1937 by Pan American Airways.
This specific model is painted in the Pan Am paint scheme. Pan American World Airways was founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West FL and Havana, Cuba. The airline has become a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems.
