B-314 Dixie Clipper Pan Am Mahogany Model
The “Dixie Clipper” was a Boeing 314 Clipper long-range flying boat, capable of trans-oceanic flights. The Dixie Clipper introduced the first trans-Atlantic flight from New York to Europe. The aircraft included sponsons-stubby wing-like structures at the waterline of the hull to stabilize the aircraft in the water, act as a gangway for passengers, and provide added lift in the air. The aircraft was built for luxury travel–a one-way ticket to Europe cost $675 (equivalent to $12,000 in 2019). The first passenger carrying transatlantic flight departed New York on June 28, 1939 with 22 passengers. Passengers were served five and six-course dinners on fine china. All B-314 Clipper aircraft have been lost or destroyed. Interesting fact: This aircraft provided the first presidential flight to the Casablanca Conference in 1943.
