But in the 1930s, the recognizably stubby airplane was the very epitome of speed. Well, speed and danger. “Gee Bee” stood for Granville Brothers, the airplane’s Massachusetts-based designer. They built just one R1, and In 1932 it won the Thompson Trophy race and set a land speed record of 296 mph. But the plane also crashed several times and even killed a pilot.
