Description
HU-16E Albatross Mahogany Model
The HU-16 Albatross is a large twin-radial engine amphibious flying boat that was used by the US Air Force, the US Navy and the US Coast Guard, primarily in the search and rescue role. The Albatross was developed to land in open ocean situations to rescue downed pilots and other flight crew members. Its deep-V hull cross-section and substantial length enable it to land in the open sea.
This specific HU-16 model is painted in the US Coast Guard paint scheme. The Coast Guard used the HU-16 as both a coastal and long-range open ocean search and rescue aircraft. It was used for many years until it was replaced by the HU-25 Guardian and HC-130 Hercules.
This handcrafted model is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail and makes a great gift for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
