Spend a few seconds surveying Sam Lyons’ starkly contrasting Mohawk Moon and you’ll probably agree that there’s a certain otherworldly element to the illustration. For starters, the 17½” x 23½” picture’s central star, a luminous white Grumman OV-1 Mohawk, is eerily reminiscent of a NASA space vehicle. Furthermore, Lyons’ depiction of a radiant full moon and inky star-filled sky serve to enhance the overall cosmic feel of the composition. Additionally, the densely wooded surface and lightly illuminated lake – both trademark features of many Lyons productions – simultaneously contribute to the celestial character while also adding a degree of terrestrial touch.
