P-38J “Putt Putt Maru” Mahogany Model
The P-38J was designed by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson in response to the Army specification for an aircraft that can reach 20,000 feet in 6 minutes. The P38 had its unique twin booms with forward-mounted engines. It was the only American fighter with twin booms during World War II. It was mostly used for bombing and reconnaissance missions and in theaters of war such as the Pacific Theater and the China-Burma-India Operations. The P-38 is said to be one of the best American fighter planes of World War II.
This specific P-38 is painted as Putt Putt Maru, Colonel Charles Henry “Mac” MacDonald’s airplane. McDonald was an American fighter ace, he commanded the 475th Fighter Group for 20 months in his P-38. He became the third ranking fighter ace in the Pacific during World War II.
