Description
TBF/TBM-3 Avenger USN Mahogany Model
The TBF/TBM Avenger was a torpedo bomber developed for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air or naval arms around the world. The Avenger entered service in 1942, and quickly became one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. The Avenger was the first design to feature a new “compound angle” wing-folding mechanism, intended to maximize storage space on an aircraft carrier; this design led to other bombers to follow suit. Notable aviators of the TBF include future President George H.W. Bush in 1943 and Paul Newman, who served as rear gunner; Newman didn’t quality for pilot training because he was color blind. The Avenger was the type of torpedo bomber used during the sinking of the two Japanese “super battleships”: the Musashi and the Yamato.
