Description
Three Shuttle Collection Mahogany Model
The Space Shuttle orbiter was the orbital spacecraft of the Space Shuttle program operated by NASA, the space agency of the United States. The orbiter was a reusable winged “space-plane,” a mixture of rockets, spacecraft, and aircraft. This space-plane could carry crews and payloads into low Earth orbit, perform on-orbit operations, then re-enter the atmosphere and land as a glider, returning its crew and any on-board payload to the Earth.
This collection of orbiters includes Atlantis, Endeavour and Discovery, which up until July 2011 were the three active shuttles for NASA.
Space Shuttle Atlantis made its maiden flight in October 1985, and made its last flight in July 2011, the last flight before the Shuttle program ended. This final flight brought additional supplies to the International Space Station. By the end of its final mission, Atlantis had orbited the Earth 4,848 times, traveling nearly 126 million miles in space or more than 525 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
Space Shuttle Discovery was operational from its maiden flight on August 30, 1984, until its final landing on March 9, 2011. The spacecraft takes its name from four British ships of exploration named Discovery, primarily HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by Captain James Cook during his third and final major voyage from 1776 to 1779. Prior to its retirement, Discovery was NASA’s Orbiter Fleet leader, having flown 39 successful missions in over 27 years of service.
Endeavour first flew in May 1992 and its last mission was in May 2011. She is named after the British HMS Endeavour, the ship which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery (1768-1771). This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, rather than the American English (“Endeavor”). Endeavour was named through a national competition involving students in elementary and secondary schools. Endeavour was the most popular entry, accounting for almost one-third of the state-level winners.
